# Is Norway Safe to Visit? A Practical Guide for 2026

Private Cruise  ·   2 minute read

**Short answer: yes.** Norway is one of the safest countries in the world to travel to, and western Norway, the land of the fjords, is about as calm as travel gets. But it is a fair question to ask, especially when the news from other parts of the world is unsettling. Here is a plain, factual answer, from people who live and work on these waters.

## What the official advisories say

The U.S. Department of State rates Norway at **Level 1: Exercise normal precautions**, the lowest of its four advisory levels. In the Global Peace Index 2025, Norway ranks second in the world for societal safety and security, behind only Iceland.

In practice, that means low crime, a stable society and a well-functioning public service. Norway is a NATO member, and the fjords of the west coast are a long way from any conflict zone.

## Everyday safety

- **Crime** is low. As anywhere, keep an eye on your belongings in busy places, but violent crime against visitors is very rare.
- **Health care** is excellent. Pharmacies are easy to find in towns, and the emergency numbers are 113 (ambulance), 112 (police) and 110 (fire).
- **Tap water** is clean and safe to drink almost everywhere.
- **English** is spoken widely and well, from hotels and taxis to the smallest village shop.
- **Card payments** are accepted almost everywhere. Many places no longer take cash at all.

## The real risks are natural, and easy to manage

If there is anything to respect in Norway, it is nature. The weather can change quickly, especially in the mountains, and the State Department itself mentions landslides and avalanches in some areas. For visitors, that comes down to common sense: dress in layers, check the forecast, and go with a local guide on the bigger hikes, such as Preikestolen or Kjerag.

On the water, the fjords are sheltered and calm for much of the year. On a private charter, the captain adjusts the route day by day to the weather, and the yacht carries safety equipment and life jackets in every size, including for children.

## Travelling to the fjords from the United States

Stavanger and Bergen are both easy to reach, with connections via Oslo, Copenhagen, Amsterdam and London. Many travellers start in Bergen and finish in Stavanger, or join a day on the Lysefjord from a cruise ship calling at Stavanger. U.S. citizens can visit Norway, part of the Schengen area, without a visa for short stays; check the latest entry requirements before you travel.

## Why a private yacht is the most relaxed way to see the fjords

Part of feeling safe is feeling looked after. On [Barolo III](https://www.privatecruisenorway.com/the-yacht) there is only your party on board, with a crew of three: a captain, your host Helge, who has spent his life on this coast, and a private chef. No queues, no crowds, and someone who knows every bay, every waterfall and every change in the weather.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is Norway safe for solo and female travellers?

Yes. Norway is widely regarded as one of the safest countries in the world for solo and female travellers.

### Is it safe to hike Preikestolen?

Yes, for anyone in reasonable shape with good shoes and the right clothing. The trail is well marked, but the cliff edges are unfenced, so take care and avoid the hike in poor weather. We can arrange a local guide.

### What happens if the weather turns on a fjord cruise?

The captain changes the route. The fjords offer plenty of sheltered water, and safety always comes first.
