The Best Time to Visit the Norwegian Fjords, Season by Season
There is no wrong time to visit the fjords of western Norway. Each season brings something different, and we sail all year. Here is what to expect.
Spring: April to May
The snow melts, and the waterfalls are at their fullest. In May, the Hardangerfjord turns white and pink as its orchards blossom, one of the most beautiful sights in Norway. Days are long and getting longer, and the fjords are still quiet before the summer season.
Summer: June to August
The long light of the Norwegian summer is something you have to experience. In late June the sun barely sets in Stavanger, and evenings on deck go on for hours. The water warms up enough for a swim, and it is the season for paddleboards and waterskis. It is also the busiest time of year, so book early, especially for July and August.

Autumn: September to October
Our favourite season. The crowds are gone, the air is clear and the slopes along the fjord turn red and gold. It is also seafood season on the coast: the Norwegian lobster season opens on 1 October, and shellfish is at its best in the cold months. Read more about dining on board.

Winter: November to March
Snow down to the waterline, low golden light and the fjord to yourselves. Winter days are short, but a few hours on the water with a warm cabin, a hot drink and a fjord that almost nobody else sees can be the most memorable of all.
When should you plan?
Many international guests plan their summer in Norway during the winter months. For July and August, and for multi-day voyages from Bergen to Stavanger, we recommend enquiring as early as possible. Day charters from Stavanger can often be arranged at shorter notice, especially outside high summer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the weather like in the fjords?
Changeable. Western Norway has a mild coastal climate, but rain and sunshine can come in the same afternoon. Bring layers and a waterproof jacket at any time of year.
When are the waterfalls at their best?
In late spring and early summer, when the snow melts, and after heavy rain at any time of year.
Can you visit the fjords in winter?
Yes. We sail all year, and the Lysefjord in winter is quiet, dramatic and very beautiful.
Send us your dates, and we will tell you what the fjord will be like when you come.
